Young Musician's Showcase: Mark Your Calendars!

Our Young Musician's Showcase performance opportunities are booking quickly! If you have small ensembles and are interested in featuring them during Showcase performances within the lobbies of our various venues prior to the VSO Classics concerts, there are many opportunities still available. Please contact Carrie Green (Education Coordinator) via e-mail (cgreen@virginiasymphony.org) or by phone (213-1403). We feature both instrumental and vocal ensembles of no more than 25 musicians. Participating students receive complimentary tickets to the VSO Classics concert immediately following their Showcase performance!

Instrument Petting Zoo

The Virginia Symphony Orchestra, partnered with Music and Arts, give parents and their children the opportunity to explore sound together during the Instrument Petting Zoo- a preconcert activity held in the lobby of Chrysler Hall before the PB&J performance.

December 3, 2008- First graders from Tidewater Park Elementary experienced classical music and powerful literacy combined! VSO cellist, Mike Daniels, made sure that his musical portion was hands-on!

SOAR Program, Yeates Middle School

December 1, 2008- Students from Yeates Middle School were treated to a performance and one-on-one coaching from VSO musicians.

Gloucester Residency 2008-2009

November 25, 2008 was a busy day for these band students! Students enjoyed performances by both the Virginia Symphony Orchestra Woodwind and Brass Quintets. Afterwards, each musician acted as clinicians- imparting experience and advice- making this day-long residency one students won't soon forget.

November 18, 2008- Portsmouth Public School students got the opportunity to experience one-on-one coaching from some of the finest VSO musicians. In the music room, in the hall, in the computer lab... music was everywhere!

Norfolk Academy Students Learn About the Horn

November 14, 2008- VSO musician, David Wick, demonstrated the musical virtues and history of the french horn for students at Norfolk Academy. Alongside his wife, Mary - a music educator for Norfolk Academy - accompanying on the piano, he both entertained and inspired!

Arts Within Reach, Holy Trinity Catholic Church

November 5, 2008- Musicians visited students from Holy Trinity Catholic School, giving a performance not only for them, but also for the general members of the community as part of the Arts Within Reach program. The string quartet spent the end of their visit answering questions from thirsty young minds.
